Montana State Bobcats football ‘excited’ to kick off spring schedule

BOZEMAN — On Tuesday afternoon, the Montana State football team will be kicking off its spring schedule and on Monday afternoon head coach Brent Vigen was ready to get practice going.

“Now we’re one day away, I couldn’t be more excited,” Vigen said. “I think the guys are (excited), they came here by and large to obviously get a degree but to play football and that’s been taken away for quite some time now, so I know they’re excited to get out there.”

The last couple weeks since Vigen took the job have been in preparation for spring ball and to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible.

“This has to be about where we are moving forward. It’s been so long since there’s been a game,” he said. “Sort out the depth chart and as much as we can integrate our schemes, and I think you come out of spring ball with those two things, you have a much better sense of who you are as a football team. Then obviously, set your sights on what needs to be improved upon in the summer.”

For Vigen and his staff, the next few weeks are all about skill development and to see who shines in each position group when the spotlight is on.

“I think the big thing for us is certainly individual skill development, but we got to find out who can go out there and play in an 11-on-11 situation as much as possible,” he said. “A good chunk of our daily work will be a team setting, then obviously those scrimmage days will be a full team setting along with the spring game.”

“I think for Troy, for his future, for our future as a football team, to get him locked in on the defensive side of the football, get him healthy, it is what’s best suited for both him and the team,” said Vigen.

As for calling plays Vigen will let his coordinators do that in all three facets of the game. Fans can see each coach call plays during the Sonny Holland Classic scrimmage on April 24 at 1 p.m.

“I’m not going to be calling the plays, that’s going to be coach (offensive coordinator Taylor Housewright) on offense, (defensive coordinator Freddie Banks) on defense, (special teams coach B.J. Robertson) on special teams,” Vigen said. “To do the job that I want to be able to do, it’s turning the play calling over on both sides and just really being there to support, encourage, give ideas to all three phases.”
