On October 10, Beartooth Highway officially closed for the season

Billings, Montana – On October 10, 2023, the Beartooth Highway (US 212) closes to all traffic for the season.
The Montana Department of Transportation posted a Facebook post on October 10th, stating that the Beartooth Highway, which is situated at an elevation of over 11,000 feet, is renowned for its extreme cold, unpredictable winter weather, and copious amounts of snow.
“Drifts have been seen as high as 26 feet,” the department said. “With these rapidly changing conditions in mind, we close the highway each fall for the safety of the traveling public.”
For everyone’s safety, drivers are kindly advised to obey the closure gates.
Although it will depend on the weather, the Friday of Memorial Day weekend is presently the intended opening date for the 2024 season.
“If you’re sad to see the iconic pass close, remember that you can always get your Beartooth Highway fill by looking back at this year’s video blogs from the springtime clearing,” the post said.
