There will soon be an archery-only mule deer season in Roundup

Roundup, Montana – In November, archers are invited to participate in a mule deer hunt in and near Roundup.

There are too many mule deer in the neighborhood, which has led to unacceptably large property damage and worries for public safety.

In response, the City of Roundup and Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks organized the management hunt in an effort to lower the population of urban deer.

The license sales start at 5:00 am on November 1st, 2024, and the archer-only hunt will run from November 27 to February 15, 2024.

Only two licenses per person may be obtained from any FWP license supplier. To make a purchase, you must have a valid conservation license and bow and arrow license.

The City of Roundup Deer Management Plan includes the mule deer management hunt.

The main strategy described in this management plan, according to FWP, is public archery hunting in and around the town in order to achieve the objective of lowering the number of urban mule deer. Ten deer, six males and four does, were harvested in 2022 after 90 either-sex mule deer licenses were sold. Since the start of the management hunts in 2014, the hunt’s success percentages have fluctuated between 8% and 18%.

Officials report a decrease in hostile deer and vehicle-deer incidents since the start of the hunts.
