River Road East Fire destroys 55 buildings, including 15 “primary residences”

Paradise, Montana – There are various structures that have been destroyed by the 17,115-acre River Road East fire near Paradise.

At a recent public meeting, Sanders County Sheriff Shawn Fielders stated that according to preliminary figures, the fire has destroyed 55 structures, including 15 “primary residences.”

“It’s a lot, but it could’ve been far, far worse,” Fielders said. “I’ve never seen anything like these firefighters. They threw everything at saving as many structures as absolutely possible.”

The fire started on Friday, August 18, 2023, and its origin is still under investigation.

At the Church on the Move, located at 300 Clayton Street in Plains, the Montana Red Cross has opened an evacuation shelter.

As of Monday morning, 711 workers are working on the River Road East Fire.

15% of the fire is under control.
