Montana – The Stillwater Mine in Nye had to close its day and night shifts on Monday, November 13, 2023, due to the death of a contract employee.

According to Heather McDowell, vice president for legal and external relations at Sibanye Stillwater, the mine’s owner, the contractor was running a bolter at the 7200 West level of the mine at around one in the morning on Monday in order to get ready for future development.

According to McDowell, the worker was pronounced deceased at the scene after coming into touch with rotating machinery.

He worked as a contractor for Canada’s Moran Mining.

Under investigation is the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration.

According to McDowell, the business sent empty buses to pick up workers who worked the night shift. She stated that all staff will receive a safety briefing from the company when work resumes.

“We are deeply saddened. It’s just a big black cloud. It’s so sad when it happened. It’s a tight-knit workplace,” she said.

The East Boulder Mine in Big Timber and the Stillwater Mine are owned by Sibanye Stillwater. Palladium and platinum are only produced in just two mines in North America.
