Sheriff for Stillwater County issues a warning about phone scams

Columbus, Montana – It has come to our attention that someone going by the name of Undersheriff Randy Smith has been phoning county citizens using our cloned number and accusing them of having federal charges after their Amazon account was stolen.
The caller tells them to use gift cards to pay the bond for alleged warrants.
The caller is highly aggressive while speaking to people and threatens to issue an arrest warrant if they hang up.
Our office is aware that we DO NOT handle any warrants in this manner, and we want the public to be aware of this.
Never will we call you and demand payment! Please don’t follow these instructions. Report any calls like these if you get them.
