United Steelworkers support the layoffs of Sibanye-Stillwater employees

Columbus, Montana – Following the revelation that Sibanye-Stillwater will be terminating 100 workers, United Steelworkers established a location this week where those workers could receive support while they hunt for new employment.

“We wanted to use the space so anyone who got laid off can find new jobs sooner rather than later,” said Eddie Lorash, the President of USW.

The primary cause of the layoffs, according to mine representatives, is the sharp decline in palladium prices, which is what the mine mostly harvests.

“I actually thought there were going to be more people laid off,” said Lorash.

“Obviously one person getting laid off is terrible, let alone 100. We think the workers will come back from this in a positive way.”

Lorash gave gratitude to Job Service Billings and the Montana Department of Labor for providing support to employees facing layoffs.
