Investigation underway after a man died following a police chase

Missoula, Montana – A person died during a Saturday night chase with Missoula police, prompting an investigation.
The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is looking into a weekend incident in which a man died after his vehicle crashed into a pond in a quarry during a police chase.
According to Lydia Arnold of the Missoula Police Department, the incident began on 11th Street West when the vehicle failed to stop for a routine traffic stop. According to Arnold, law enforcement lost sight of the car for a short period of time before it was found by authorities.
The car later came to a halt in the Target Range area before continuing on his way. According to Arnold, MPD then decided to call off the chase. However, after the car crashed into a pond at a quarry near the primary school, authorities saw a man run out.
According to Arnold, authorities gave the driver verbal directions as he began swimming away from the officers in the water. The man disappeared underwater, and his corpse was subsequently discovered by a Missoula County Search & Rescue dive team.
Authorities have not revealed the man’s identity. The incident is currently being investigated by the DCI.
