Billings, Montana – The Houston Independent School District’s area superintendent, Edwin Garcia, was chosen by the Billings School Board to become the new head of the public school system.

Garcia received a unanimous vote of support from the nine board members.

Greg Upham will retire at the conclusion of current academic year, and Garcia was one of three finalists to take his position. Thom Peck, the superintendent of Lewistown, and Brenda Koch, the executive director for K–12 at Billings Public Schools, were the other two.

Koch was the board’s second choice, and the members unanimously decided to offer her the position if Garcia turned it down.

The district must now prepare a contract proposal for Garcia, which the board will subsequently accept.

The board clerk and human resources director both stated that the position’s base pay is $205,000 with negotiation for perks.

Following open interviews with all three candidates on Wednesday night, the board decided on Garcia.
